Tom Bihn Travel Tray Review

Do you know that sick feeling? The one where you reach in your pocket for something you really need and you can picture it on the top of the dresser in the hotel. The hotel that is now 300 miles in your rear-view mirror.

Anyone who travels regularly knows that feeling. Unfortunately, your options are limited. You could choose not to carry anything at all but that might be counter-productive. Wearing the same pants all week and never emptying your pockets is not a very appealing solution either.

A couple of companies make little travel caddies that are designed to set on the aforementioned hotel dresser and collect your pocketables in a single place but none of them have hit the nail on the head for me. They were too heavy, too bulky or just missing a little something to make them cool enough to own.

I received a new one to try recently, the Tom Bihn Travel Tray.

Made from ripstop Dyneema nylon it weighs a mere 2 ounces and flattens down to take up nearly no space in your luggage when empty. When expanded, it forms a tube with an open top that is 8 inches in diameter and 4.5 inches tall.

Flat...

...and fluffy!

So, the idea is simple. It sits on the dresser in your room and your change and keys get unloaded into it. You know where everything is and nothing gets left behind.

It also makes a perfect portable tray for stuff that can’t go through security at the airport. Unload your pockets into the travel tray and then pull the flap over the top and pull the drawstring. Every thing is secure and goes through the X ray to be recovered on the other side.

Then you can just pop the whole thing into the pocket of your luggage to reassemble everything when you are safely at your gate. Tom Bihn has an insightful video below on how that process works.

The Iberian one will even double as a reasonable fez if you need to masquerade as a Shriner!

Like everything from Tom Bihn, it is well thought out, carefully crafted and darn nigh indestructible. Highly recommended especially if you have ever left anything in a hotel room!

Tom Bihn Travel Tray $22 and available in 4 colors. Hand-crafted in the good, old USA!
