OSX Lion Impending!

I am excited about the purported release of OSX Lion on July 14th. Read a report on it at cultofmac.com here.

Some of the features like Mission Control and full screen apps are appealing and look to improve the usability of OSX even further.

What I am most interested in seeing though, is the sale and distribution of Lion as a download in the MacApp store.

At $30, nearly every Mac owner will upgrade and Apple would have to understand and be prepared for that. There really is no reason NOT to do so. No trip to the store, no waste created on materials and possibly no downside…if all goes smoothly. Talk about Carbon Neutral!

Not to pick on Microsoft (well, maybe a little!) but can you imagine them trying to roll out Vista as an over the web upgrade? The complexities of that are daunting but for some reason I trust Apple to have this bit of it right.

If this works, and I have no reason to believe it will not, does it complete the death of boxed software? Is this the final coffin nail?

What if I am wrong to trust Apple on this? Let’s say that the servers are completely pulled off the rails by the demand and gnashing of digital gears is audible all over the world. Let’s say, hypothetically of course, that Cupertino is brought to its knees by the bandwidth demands and that many computers do not respond well to being updated OTA like this.

What happens? Do you stop trusting the veracity of the concept? Do you continue, but draw the line at operating system upgrades?

I think this is a pivotal moment in the entire process of procuring software and it will impact all of our buying patterns. The tipping point is all balanced on Apple’s ability to work through the issues on this on the front end, and their ability to support it on the back end. Their track record is generally good on these types of issues.

Perhaps this is what Mr Huxley had in mind all along.

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, this is wonderful blog. A fantastic read. I’ll certainly be back.
